Scholars at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Guwahati have invented a microfiltration method to isolate microplastics from seawater. Environmental Technology and Innovation is the journal in which the study was published. Plastic waste, according to the team, is widespread all over the world, and although there is some recognition, the severity of the problem is not yet acknowledged. Microplastics were found in 90% of the table salt products tested worldwide, according to research conducted in East Asia.
Microplastics, which are plastic particles less than a quarter of an inch, have already been discovered in nearly all oceans and aquatic mammals. What’s worse, microplastic has been discovered of large quantities in sea salt. Ingesting microplastics can trigger hormonal disruption, miscarriage, nervous system disorders, and even cancer, according to Kaustubha Mohanty, Department of Chemical Engineering, IIT Guwahati.
